Concerned about the long-term care tax coming to your state?

Update by State Regarding the Long-Term Care Tax

Updated July 2023

Alaska

Alaska is one of the most expensive states for long-term health care, and the state has made initial steps for a Long-Term Care Insurance Partnership Program but has yet to implement it. Even so, it is carefully watching the unfolding situation in Washington and the upcoming tax proposition in California.

More information will be added here as it becomes available.

California

The state of California’s task force submitted 5 proposed plan designs to the Governor, Insurance Commissioner, and Legislature in December of 2022. A final recommendation is expected sometime before or on January 1, 2024. The state government is being intentionally tight-lipped about your options to opt out. They are also pushing this through as quickly as possible to avoid opposition. They are expected to follow the WA Cares model. (Click HERE for more information on the tax.) The workers there who opted out were those who were proactive.
